The old advice was "throw #fyp #foryou #viral on everything and pray." That doesn't work anymore. In fact it can quietly hurt you.
What hashtags actually do in 2026
They help TikTok categorise your video so it can find the right test audience. That's it. They don't magically add reach. They tell the algorithm what the video is about.
The 3 hashtag rule
Use 3 to 5 hashtags. Not 20.
- 1 niche hashtag. Very specific. #powerliftingform, #sourdoughtok, #vintagenintendo.
- 1 broad hashtag. Category level. #fitness, #cooking, #gaming.
- 1 trend / topic hashtag. Related to what your video is doing.
Hashtags to stop using
- #fyp, #foryou, #viral. TikTok basically ignores them and it reads as beginner.
- Random trending hashtags unrelated to your video. Confuses the algo.
- Banned or greyed out hashtags. Check by searching for it. If nothing loads, skip.
What matters way more than hashtags
Your on-screen text and your first spoken words. The algorithm reads both. If your video is about sourdough and your first 2 seconds say "sourdough tip nobody tells you," you've done more for categorisation than 20 hashtags ever will.
The 30 second version
3 to 5 hashtags. 1 niche, 1 broad, 1 topical. Never #fyp. Focus on the hook.
